Today is the last day of my spring vacation so I decided to write a little story about it. When I don't have to go to school I really like to hang out at home with my family and sometimes I have friends over. When I am at home I like to eat, play games with my sister, read, play game boy, ride my bike and kick a ball around. During the holidays, I get to stay up really late and eat!
I am 22 years old and at the time I went I was a senior at the University at Albany. I am told it was particularly bad because last year because of the hurricane but that was really the first thing I noticed when I got to Mexico. I went through Studenttravelbreaks.
All around the streets of Cancun, and across from our hotel especially, merchants would hoot, holler and get into your face offering you anything. From t-shirts, to beads, to marijuana, to whatever, this one guy offered me his sister. At first I found the merchants funny, and I would even go and talk with them to barter for fun.
Towards the end of the week I had enough of them and I would do a funky little dance every time they tried to talk to me. At first I was a little disappointed but, after My experience during the spring break few nights of meeting beautiful Mexican girl after beautiful Mexican girl, I realized that I had actually lucked out.
It was a cool site to see. Besides the huge pipes in front of our hotel for the first couple days the beaches were amazing.
I have never swam in water so warm with waves so unreal. In fact the waves were so crazy they would literally rip you off your feet and throw you into the water.
I ended up cutting the backside of my forearm because the waves threw me into the beach so hard one night when I went drinking and playing the Ocean.
The weather was good, It rained the first day but was clear and beautiful the rest of the week. Girasol - "Sunflower" On to the hotel, we stayed at the Girasol "ghetto-sol" as it was lovingly referred to by our rep Betsy who was also staying there. Our room was water wrecked.
All the furniture including the cabinets, dresser, bed, nightstand, you name it was destroyed and then just repainted. The bathroom smelled because the drain in floor had clogged up. We were promised a lock box and a refrigerator by our travel rep which we never got.
The balcony was the best part of our room and it overlooked the ocean. At night I would sneak around the Girasol drunk, and explore the rooms the had been washed away by the hurricane. These rooms were cool because they literally had been left untouched with personal articles, pictures, and diaries still left where the previous occupants, who I guess were actually living there when the storm hit.
The hotel manager was actually a really friendly guy and on our last day I talked with him, and confessed I had snuck around and explored the wrecked rooms.
Clubs - "The place to get down!! You can expect to pay the equivalent of whatever you drink in tips. Speaking of shots, watch out for the shot girls. The shot girls walkup to you start blowing their whistles in your face. You have to make it clear to them you are not paying for it and then they will go away.
After open bar closes, as I found in every club in Cancun, the ridiculous Mexican Reggaeton comes on.
At first I hated but, by the end of the week I was singing along to all these songs I had never heard before. Leaving the clubs was fun too because on several occasions I needed to take a bus to get home, on the bus the drunk partiers chanted, sang and hot rowdy sometimes.
On one bus ride home a girl showed her boobs after everyone chanted for it, and on other a large brawl broke out. The shows were amazing with fire breathers, techno dancers, and hot women.
I remember stumbling around the floor at the end of the night making out whatever girl I ran into until the club closed.
I ended up going back to the city later in the week because I liked it so much. Every club in Cancun blew the doors off even the best places I have at home but as far as the clubs went in Cancun this was my least favorite.
Each club however, seemed to offer something unique and special that I liked about it.Deciding to take an alternative spring break trip and volunteer abroad is a no-brainer!
